Angry Dan's ColumnHeterosexual, Omnivorous Anglo-American Maleby Daniel StrohlFirst of all, I would like to apologize to a very special woman for last month's column. I should have stated that any similarities to any persons, live or dead, is purely coincidental. The column was meant to be a work of fiction. Second, I'd like to point out my 2 new websites: the redesign of myopia and my personal website. Myopia is a small zine for unestablished writers, musicians and other types of artists. Third, my column. I am a heterosexual, omnivorous Anglo-American male. And one of the things I hate the most is when I form an opinion criticizing any of the causes of any of the minorities in this nation on what I believe is the basis of reason, someone, usually in that minority, says I am wrong or have an unformed opinion because I am a heterosexual omnivorous Anglo-American male. To make such a statement implies or states outright that I, like the typical "Angry White Male," am uneducated and do not understand what it is like to be a minority and have to fight for what's rightfully mine. Maybe I never have been black, Hispanic, homosexual, vegan, Asian-American, etc., but dont ever tell me I can't understand what those people are going through. Such a statement I take as an insult to my intelligence. I'm not going to say I feel discriminated against because I'm white male; that's a stupid argument. Nor will I say I understand because I was unpopular and discriminated against in high school; that's too obvious an argument and not my point anyway. I will say that I do pay attention to the plights of many minorities. I keep myself educated. I watch the bigotry and I watch the fights against it. And while I disagree with bigotry and not accepting others, I also keep in mind that people are not right just because they fight bigotry, hatred and racism. The only way to fight ignorance is with intelligence. Back to my point in general, I pay attention. Maybe most or some heterosexual omnivorous Anglo-American males do not, but you, if you happen to be in the vocal minority, cannot exclude all heterosexual omnivorous Anglo-American males from understanding your message just because a portion do not. I believe that is called a stereotype.
